The format or layout of the information in your cv in a large way influences how the information is viewed or perceived by the reader.

The CV should read like a book, have a start, introduction, main body and closing. Avoid too much information and vice-versa ensure that you have sufficient information. At the very least always ensure that your contact details are included.

The employer reading the cv will shortlist primarily based on Qualifications and Experience in the same or similar role. This is done either by an electronic system, as a result of screening answers or word matching by an ATS (Application Tracking System). There are many types of ‘resume mirrors’ which allow an electronic medium to screen the cv’s and reach a short list based on the cv content.

 

Once the system (or user) has reached a shortlist, the cv is further scrutinized by the Line Manager, Recruiter or Business Leader. It is at this level of scrutiny that the cv is perused for all its content.

 

Interview Panel members will frown against errors that they pick up in the CV like spelling, grammar, dates, formatting and alignment. It does not mean the end of the road for the applicant, but it does show a level of attention to detail and accuracy.
